LAKE CALIFORNIA AERO CLUB

TRINITY ALPS

~ HAPPY NEW YEAR! ~
I hope that everyone reading this had a wonderful Christmas or Hanukkah with loved ones and friends. There were signs of holiday parties all around the community. We had family join us to celebrate and it was great. A whole new year! What are we going to do with it? There are 366 days (yes, 2012 is a Leap Year) to fill with who knows what activities. New Years day will find some of our pilots taking their first flight of the year. We have some of the best flying weather in the country right here in the north state. Before long it will be time to get out the gardening tools, patio furniture and bar-b-qs once again. And we will once again be planning where our summer travels will take us. While you are filling out your calendar for the year and think you might want to come to join in the hangar talk with the Aero Club, please do join us. Just come to the Lake Club at 12:30 p.m. on the 2nd Sunday of the month for our potluck lunch. You can call me at 347-3164 to make sure that the meeting is on for the month. We just bring a dish of some kind to share, personal place settings and a beverage of our choice. We are a friendly group and love to talk about airplanes and flying. “Blue skies, tail winds & safe landings”‘til next month.

One of the signs posted at your Lake California Airstrip says: “Unauthorized traffic – Vehicle, foot or bicycle on taxi and runways or other airport property subject to immediate fine”. But there has been an increase of people using the Lake California airstrip as a shortcut. That sign is not there because we are mean or selfish. It is because we are concerned with the safety of our friends and neighbors who call this wonderful community home. If you have ever been to Redding Airport or Benton Field, you have seen signs advising that no one but authorized personnel can go beyond a certain point. All of these signs are posted for good reason and I would like to take this opportunity to explain.
We have all heard and enjoyed seeing and watching the planes as they lift off and fly away. But were you aware that when those planes return and are on the final part of their landing you cannot hear them. The reason for this is because they have cut back to the least engine power for the landing. And during this time, the pilot and the plane are at an angle where the pilot is looking far down the runway and wouldn’t see anyone who might be on the runway right under them. At the time that the plane touches down, it is still traveling at least 60 to 80 miles an hour. And even if the pilot did see you at the last minute, planes are not like cars in that they are unable to swerve at the last minute to avoid hitting someone or something in their path. It is dangerous for both the person on the runway and the pilot.
This is why when you are out for a walk or your daily run, we hope that you will remember this article, understand and not cut across the airport.
Thank you for your cooperation.
“Blue skies, tail winds & safe landings” ‘till next month.
