8th ANNUAL TAKE-A-KID FISHING DERBY
June 28th, 2008
by Andy Spotswood
The 8th Annual Take A Kid Fishing Derby for the youngsters of the Lake California community is scheduled for Saturday, June 28th. The derby will be open only to children directly related to Lake California residents or property owners who are between the ages of ten and fifteen.
The Take a Kid Fishing Derby, which was originated in 2001, pairs youngsters with adult boaters giving the youngsters the opportunity to fish for bass on lake California. Entrants do not need to be experienced fishers, and all fishing gear is supplied. There is no entry fee. Past events have been a challenging but fun and rewarding experience for most all!
Each entrant will receive prizes at the conclusion of the event. Trophies will be awarded to the top fishers and to the kid catching the largest bass. Lunch will be provided to all entrants and volunteers at the conclusion of fishing.
To participate, the youngsters must register at Goff Hall. Registration forms will be available starting May 1tth and registration will close June 20th. late entries may be considered on a space available basis, and a list kept in case of any cancellations. I do request that any entrat that is aware that they are unable to participate call Andy Spotswood so their space can be filled by an entrant on the waiting list. This event is limited to twenty-five boys and girls on a first come, first served basis. This is to ensure that each entrant is properly paired with a volunteer boater. Each entrant will be paired with a boater other than his or her parent or grandparent. on the day of the event, the entrants and the volunteer boaters check in at the Lake Club and receive their pairings at 7:30 a.m. Fishing will begin shortly thereafter and conclude at 11:00 a.m. BBQ and award presentations will follow.
The past success of this event has been the result of both the volunteer boaters and the financial support from members of the community. If you are a fisherman willing to be a volunteer boater, or have questions about this event, or are able to offer other support, please call Andy Spotswood at 347-3103.
